Aston Villa are still believed to want a new centre-back before the end of the month, and the Championship club should swoop to land Robert Huth on a free transfer.
What’s the word, then?
Villa continued their positive start to the 2018-19 Championship campaign with a 2-2 draw at home to Brentford on Wednesday night.
Steve Bruce’s side actually needed a 94th-minute effort from Jonathan Kodjia to level the scores at Villa Park, but they now boast eight points from four league matches.
It is expected to be a busy end to the transfer window for Villa, with Yannick Bolasie already arriving on loan from Everton.
The Championship outfit are still believed to want another centre-back, meanwhile, with Mile Jedinak currently being pressed into action alongside James Chester at the back.
Rather than seek a loan from a Premier League club, Bruce’s side should be looking at bringing in Huth, who is available on a free transfer following his release from Leicester City.
Why would Huth be a good signing?
There will be concerns over Huth’s fitness following a long period on the sidelines, but there is no question that the German is a fine defender when fit.

The 34-year-old played a key role in Leicester’s 2015-16 title-winning Premier League campaign, but did not turn out for the Foxes last season due to ankle and foot injuries.
Huth – linked with Middlesbrough earlier this summer – has no plans to hang up his boots, however, and would be a wonderful signing for Villa in the latter stages of August.
The former Germany international also won two Premier League titles during his time at Chelsea, and is the type of no-nonsense central defender that Villa need this summer following the departure of John Terry at the end of last season.
It would be fair to say that the Villa supporters have not been impressed with Jedinak’s performances in central defence, and the arrival of Huth would put an end to that.
