Aston Villa have been given a huge boost in the pursuit of John Terry with the central defender confirming that he has turned down a contract offer from Spartak Moscow.
What’s the story?
Terry, 37, left Villa on a free transfer at the end of last season, with Steve Bruce’s side unable to earn promotion to the Premier League.
The centre-back’s future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, but it had been thought that Spartak Moscow had won the race for his signature.
Terry, however, via a post on Instagram, has confirmed that he has turned down the opportunity to move to Moscow.
Villa are still in desperate need of a new centre-back having not replaced Terry during the summer, and the former Chelsea and England captain has been linked with a return.
There are other clubs in the hunt for Terry, but Villa have been given a huge boost, and the defender recently revealed that he had ‘unfinished business’ at the club.
Will Villa now re-sign Terry?
The Villa supporters have made their feelings on Mile Jedinak being selected at centre-back pretty clear in recent matches, but that currently remains the case.

James Chester is actually Villa’s only senior centre-back, with Tommy Elphick being allowed to move on loan to Hull City in the final stages of the summer window.
Bruce’s side are currently on a five-game winless run in all competitions, which has left the club’s supporters very frustrated.
Terry left Villa at the end of last season with the club unable to offer the former England captain a new contract due to their financial problems.
Things have changed since then, however, and now the time is right for Villa to secure a return for the central defender, who would certainly turn them into promotion contenders.
